How Etsy fees work
Etsy takes three fees on almost every sale. The transaction fee is the big one: 6.5% of everything the buyer pays you except tax, so free shipping does not dodge it. Payment processing is charged on the whole order, tax included, and the fixed 25 cents hits cheap items hardest.
On a $10 item with no shipping, the three fixed and percentage fees add up to about $1.40, or 14% of the sale. On a $100 item they come to $9.95, under 10%. If you sell low-priced items, bundling or raising the price slightly protects more of your margin than cutting shipping.
Worked example
Take a $25 item with $5 shipping charged, an $8 item cost and a $4.50 label. Etsy charges $3.30 in fees (11.0% of the $30.00 the buyer paid you), leaving a payout of $26.70. After $12.50 of costs you keep $14.20. To make $5 more on the same item, you would need to sell it for $30.53.
